Meet Leah Seeling, a Maryland native, mom of three, wife, and the powerhouse behind Maryland’s #1 family fun platform, MDfunfam.
With a degree in Social Work from Salisbury University, Leah began her career as a Child and Family Foster Care Case Worker. But when she stepped away to focus on raising her kids, she noticed something missing: a go-to resource to inspire families to explore, connect, and create core memories together. So, she built one herself!
That vision became MDFunFam, where Leah shares everything from hidden gem getaways and scenic hikes to family-friendly restaurants, local businesses, and can’t-miss events across Maryland.
Leah shares her top 3 Maryland adventures, her love for practical jokes, and what inspired her to start sharing her family outings to help other local families get out and make lasting memories together.
Tell us a little bit about you and your family! Where did you grow up? How long have you lived in Maryland? How many kids do you have?
Born in Baltimore, MD, moved to Carroll County and have lived here for the past 35 years. I have three children ( ages 12, 10, and 7). We're a BIG sports family and even play lacrosse year-round. When we aren't on the sports field, we love exploring Maryland and even up and down the East Coast.
You are a digital creator and the #1 MD Family Fun Platform! How did you get to your career today? Tell us how you got started!
My background is actually in Social work, I got my degree from Salisbury University. Go Gulls!!! After some extremely emotional cases as a Child and Family Foster Care Case worker, I took a break from casework and focused on being the best mom possible. I realized the lack of family engagement with the community, so I started sharing our family outings to encourage other local families to get out and make core memories.
As a digital creator, you spend a lot of time on the road and at events. Tell us how you balance work and family.
I am very blessed that all three of my children are school age, so I do the majority of my editing, office work, and traveling during the week. I block off weekends and weeknights for family time. I am also lucky to have this job because 9 out of 10 times, if I do have to travel on weeknights or the weekends, I get to take my kids with me. If not, I have an extremely helpful extended family that lives close by. It truly takes a village.
What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
I won the class clown in High School. I am a huge practical jokester and believe laughter is the best medicine.
What do you wish people knew about your job as a content creator?
It's not all rainbows and butterflies, so to speak. There is truly a lot of blood, sweat and tears that goes into it. Many long nights staying up editing, behind the scenes physical work and self induced stress during every outing to get the perfect shots . Some posts take hours to shoot and then hours to edit. Being a family page has its pros and cons as well. Being a mom and business owner at the same time is a true juggling act. Imagine taking your kids to work with you, making sure they are enjoying themselves while still getting the job done can be a challenging task.
How has your job shifted your perspective on Motherhood?
It has helped me realize how important balancing motherhood and a career truly is. I have realized when to switch hats. I can't keep them both on at the same time, all the time. It's important to be Mom and just Mom sometimes. My job has also helped me realize how important it is to enjoy motherhood because they grow up so fast.
What’s something you love that’s just for you?
I love working out, going on hikes alone with a cup of coffee, and just sitting there enjoying the views.
Name something you hope your children look back and remember about their childhood and you as their mama.
I hope they always remember all our fun exploring together. All the family hikes, family dinner conversations, building sandcastles on the beach, cheering for them on the sidelines, etc. I want them to remember me as a fun mom, but most importantly, a supportive and present mom.
Best mom hack that makes your life easier.
Who has most influenced you to be the mom you are today?
My own mother. She left an amazing career with the FBI to raise my sister and me. My mother is the most selfless person I have ever known, and her dedication to her family, friends, community, and religion is extremely admirable and shapes who I am today.
Best advice for mom guilt.
I'll never forget this, my husband and I had the opportunity of a lifetime to go to the Super Bowl in January 2013 to watch the Baltimore Ravens in NOLA. I wasn't going to go because it was the 1st time I would have left our son, who was a few months old at the time. My mom looked me straight in the face and said, “ You're not the only one who loves him.” So every time I feel guilty about not being there for my children, I remember it's important for them to feel loved and cared for by others too, and that's ok. Just because someone else is helping care for your child(ren) at times doesn't make me a bad mom.
You’ve been all over Maryland. What is the coolest thing you’ve experienced that you would recommend to a family?
This is so hard because there are so many great places and experiences. If I had to pick, just to name a few….
The Wylder Hotel Tilghman Island
Camping in a Yurt at Rocky Gap State Park and driving to Swallow Falls
Staying in the mansion featured on Bravo TV in St. Michael's and crabbing off the pier, swimming in the pool, and watching the sunset on what felt like a private island (Tremezzo Stay)
What have you learned from your children?
To simply enjoy the little things in life!
Greatest gift about being a mom.
The greatest gift of being a mom is the deep, unconditional bond formed with your child—a connection built on love, trust, and shared growth. It's the privilege of witnessing and shaping a life from the very beginning, and in return, experiencing a kind of love and purpose that is both grounding and transformative.
MDfunfam is family of 5, all born and raised in Maryland. Leah and her family love exploring Maryland during all 4 seasons and are huge fans of the Baltimore Orioles, Baltimore Ravens and the Maryland Whipsnakes. The Eastern shore is where Leah (Mom), went to college and one of their favorite places to visit throughout the year. Eric (Dad) grew up in Baltimore and is now a proud Maryland small Business owner. While the Seeling family isn't busy on the sidelines cheering their kids on in one of their many sports, they're supporting local business and scoping out hidden gems across the state.
MDfunfam's goal is to always be transparent and 100% honest about places they share. With every new spot, they provide tips they learned during the visits to hopefully help maximize their follower's experience! Their hope is to encourage all Marylanders to get out and explore!
Reach out to MDfunfam if you have any recommendations on where they should visit next!
