Meet Jade Jawish

Meet Jade Jawish, a Kent Island mom of two, wife, and the founder of the newest dance cardio workout class in Maryland, Moms in Motion! Jade Jawish started Moms in Motion as an idea in a garage for friends to come to unwind, have fun + get a good workout. Now, Moms in Motion classes are full body workouts that combine cardio dance + toning! But it’s more than just a dance fitness class – it’s a community of women who come together to have fun, get fit, and feel good about themselves. You don’t have to be a mom or a dancer to join in on the fun! You just have to be willing to let loose and enjoy the music.

So she gathered up some girlfriends and started hosting dance classes in her garage. After amazing feedback and encouragement, Jade opened her classes to the public and founded Moms in Motion! Jade shares her best advice for mom guilt, what you can expect at a Moms in Motion class, and the surprising thing about her childhood that taught her the value of hard work!

Tell us a little bit about you and your family! Where did you grow up? How long have you lived in the area? How many kids do you have?

Hi,  I’m Jade Jawish! I was born in York, PA and moved around a lot as a child. I spent most of my younger years helping on our family farm until I moved to Maryland. Growing up I was always into athletics playing basketball & running track. After high school,  I  attended Salisbury University, eventually leading me to live on the Eastern Shore. I met my husband during my last year of college and we were inseparable from our first date. My husband was born and raised in Annapolis, so we knew we wanted to live by the water. We have lived on Kent Island for about 11 years and have 2 wonderful children.

You created Moms in Motion. How did you get to your career today? Tell us how you got started!

I only started dancing in High School; I never belonged to a dance studio. I grew up just dancing for fun and when I attended college I tried out for their Poms Dance Team and I minored in Dance.  After being on the team, I knew I wanted to further my dancing career. I was a part of other semi-pro dance teams during and post college. I became a professional Cheerleader for the former Washington Redskins for 4 years, my last year as captain. I traveled overseas to many countries and performed for our military troops too. I then coached a few various teams and still choreograph today!

When I became a stay-at-home mom of two, I realized how much I missed dancing. I started hosting dance classes in my garage for about 2 years with my former teammates. I decided I wanted to open it up to some of my mama friends and I received great feedback that they encouraged me to open up my classes to the public!

Moms in Motion was created to allow women to have a fun dance workout, but more importantly to find other like-minded women and form new friendships.  It is okay to be a mom and take time for YOU. My mission is to create a positive and supportive community for anyone who wants to take care of themselves and have fun while doing it! I offer monthly classes, pop up classes around the Delmarva area, & private classes - perfect for moms clubs or bachelorettes! I recently completed my first health & wellness retreat in Bethany Beach called, Moms in Motion at the Ocean. It was an amazing experience that highlighted 50 local small businesses; 48 of which were women-owned. It was a bucket list item for me and it was a great success! Another venture that I recently launched was Kids in Motion; where we can get our littles moving through dance. I started with a summer series so the children can be outdoors, get their wiggles out & have a silly dance workout.

Tell us what we can expect if we come to a Moms in Motion class.

You can expect a 1-hour full-body workout! Classes are about 15 different songs where you will learn a set of choreography that repeats. The moves are easy to follow & cued. The more you come to classes the more familiar you will get with the choreography. One of the most fun things about the classes is that there are themed classes! We may be dancing to 90’s hip hop in one class & current pop songs in the next. Whether it is an intimate class or a large one, we always celebrate each other, create new friendships, and take about 30 seconds after the cooldown to reflect and meditate.

What are some tips for staying fit as a busy mom?

Carving out that time! If we plan meals & all the kid's activities - we can take time to plan ours too! I personally try to workout in the mornings or right after the kids go to bed so I can be uninterrupted. A good 30 minutes a day is wonderful!

How has your job shifted your perspective of Motherhood?

It’s not easy to balance motherhood and personal growth, but I have found that I am a better mom when I am taking care of myself as well. I want to lead by example and teach my kids that mommy takes care of herself. Working with other small women-owned businesses who share my vision has motivated and empowered me.

What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

My childhood was spent on a farm, caring for livestock. Those early mornings and late evenings tending to the animals taught me the value of hard work!

What’s something you love that’s just for you?

I love to watch re-runs of The Golden Girls - it’s my favorite show & I can recite all the episodes!

Best mom hack that makes your life easier.

Pre-planning the week of activities for the kids. Especially during summer - I try to schedule playdates & at least one thing per day to do with the kids so we have some things prescheduled to look forward to in the week ahead.

Name something you hope your children look back and remember about their childhood and you as their mama.

I hope they remember how much fun they had. How many different adventures they experienced with their mama!

What’s your favorite family activity to do in the area?

I love to take the kids strawberry picking at Family Affair Farm & to visit Matapeake Beach.

What have you learned from your children?

My children have taught me to enjoy the little things. I get so wrapped up in “what is next” that seeing them take their time makes me want to take my time too.

Greatest gift about being a mom.

Watching your child learn. When you see in their eyes that they understand something, it is so fulfilling and such a proud moment to watch them grow.

Best advice for mom guilt.

There is always tomorrow! Just because today wasn’t your best doesn’t mean that tomorrow can’t be great.

Who has most influenced you to be the mom you are today?

My sister. My sister is a mother of 4 and she has always encouraged me to make sure I take time for myself. Her guidance and experience as a mom has helped me get through some tough times in motherhood. I can always go to her with questions or when I need to vent. It’s nice to have someone in your life that you know you can express all your emotions!
